On April 17, 2026, the Institute of Economics of the NAS of Belarus held a Unified Information Day on the topic “Chernobyl: From Recovery to Sustainable Development”.

The event was opened by Alexander POSTALOVSKY, Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Belarus, Candidate of Sociologic Sciences, Associate Professor. He discussed the problems and relevance of the Chernobyl tragedy.

Vitaly PILUI, Deputy Director for Research and Innovation at the Institute of Economics of the NAS of Belarus, Candidate of Economic Sciences, discussed the role of the state in ensuring minimally safe conditions for public health in the first years after the accident, and in implementing subsequent measures for the socioeconomic rehabilitation of the territories, social protection of the affected population, and the development of infrastructure and the economy of the affected regions.

It was noted that, as part of its scientific support for the implementation of state programs to address the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, the Institute of Economics has developed a comprehensive methodology for assessing the socioeconomic potential of affected areas, intended to provide scientific and methodological support to government agencies. The methodology is based on a systematic assessment of a range of socioeconomic and environmental indicators, enabling the identification of areas of resource underutilization and potential economic growth opportunities.

The practical significance of this development lies in the potential use of its results in the development of state programs, regional strategies, and territorial development management mechanisms that will facilitate the integration of the Chernobyl disaster into the national security system.

Nikolai BORISEVICH, Head of the Department of Scientific and Organizational Support and Information and Analytical Work at the State Scientific and Technical Institution “Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety”, delivered a report entitled “From the Chernobyl Tragedy to the Development of Nuclear Energy (on the 40th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Accident)”.

The speaker’s professionalism and practical experience in nuclear energy allowed him to examine a wide range of issues related to the heroic work of the accident liquidators, the impact of the accident on the environment and human health, and the measures taken in the Republic of Belarus to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.

The speaker’s disclosures about the heroic work of the first liquidators, the resettlement of residents from contaminated areas, and the measures taken to overcome the tragedy were of particular interest and to those present.

The staff was also interested in the speaker’s assessment of the current radiation situation in Belarus, particularly in the areas contaminated by the accident. The speaker’s assertion that the state is taking all effective measures to address the consequences of the Chernobyl accident was supported by a detailed discussion of such issues as: an analysis of state programs to address the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, the structure and activities of government agencies monitoring the environment and pollution levels, and the measures taken by the state to provide social protection for liquidators and residents of contaminated areas in Belarus.

Nikolai BORISEVICH provided expert and comprehensive answers to a number of questions.

The staff of the Institute of Economics of the NAS of Belarus and the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Belarus are grateful to Nikolai BORISEVICH for his presentation.
